Sizes are approximate and based on a square image. Actual size will vary depending on image shape, edge style, whimsies, and other components. We aim to cut two pieces per square inch.

What image can I use for a custom puzzle?
Almost anything. A family portrait, a wedding photo, a pet photo, a child's drawing or painting, a travel memory, a piece of artwork you own. The best images have a good range of color, texture, and detail. Large areas of flat color (solid blue sky, plain white backgrounds) can make a puzzle more difficult. You are responsible for owning the copyright to any image you submit.
What file format and resolution do I need?
Submit your image as a high-resolution JPEG or TIFF. The larger the file the better. We recommend at least 5MB for the best print quality. Avoid screenshots, images pulled from social media, or heavily cropped photos, as these tend to lack the resolution required for a crisp image.
What sizes are available?
We make custom wooden jigsaw puzzles ranging from 50 to 900 pieces. The final puzzle dimensions will vary based on the shape and orientation of your image. We aim to cut approximately two pieces per square inch. Contact us if you have a specific size in mind and we'll find the best fit.
Will my puzzle be the exact piece count I order?
Because every Elms Puzzle is crafted by hand on a scroll saw, without any preset design template, it is nearly impossible to intentionally produce an exact piece count. Instead, we promise to always delivery a custom puzzle with at least as many pieces as you order. For example, if you order 300 pieces, the final puzzle will likely be 300-325 pieces.
Can I request custom whimsy pieces?
Yes — and this is one of the things that makes an Elms custom puzzle truly one of a kind. We can cut special whimsy pieces shaped to your image: initials, dates, a silhouette of your pet, a heart, a name, or any shape that's meaningful to you. We generally include 2–3 whimsy pieces per 100 pieces. Let us know what you'd like and we'll talk through what's possible.
Can I get an irregular border or shaped puzzle?
Yes. For orders of 200 pieces or more, we can cut an irregular border instead of a standard straight edge. Just let us know your preference when you place your order or reach out before ordering if you have questions.
How is an Elms custom puzzle different from other photo puzzles I can order online?
Most custom photo puzzles are mass-produced: your image is printed on cardboard or thin wood and die-cut by machine. Every puzzle is identical. An Elms custom wooden jigsaw puzzle is cut by hand on a scroll saw by one of our artisans — piece by piece, by a person, in our workshop. No two cuts are ever exactly the same. Yours is a one-of-one object. It is the only one in the world.
How long does it take?
Custom puzzles are made to order. Allow 6–8 weeks from the time your design details are confirmed for handcrafting and delivery. If you need it sooner, contact us before ordering and we'll let you know what's possible.
Can I order more than one copy of the same custom puzzle?
Yes. Contact us when placing your order and we can discuss pricing for multiple copies of the same design.

Are custom puzzles returnable?
Because every custom puzzle is made to order and unique to your image, custom puzzles are non-returnable. If there is a defect or quality issue with your puzzle, please contact us and we will make it right.
