Gerardus Mercator

Gerardus Mercator (1512–1594) was a Flemish cartographer and mathematician who revolutionized mapmaking with the Mercator projection. His innovation enabled accurate nautical navigation and reshaped global exploration. Mercator also coined the term “atlas,” producing maps that balanced scientific precision with artistic craftsmanship.
