Vincent van Gogh painted Cypresses in June 1889 at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy, rendering the towering trees in swirling strokes of deep green and black — symbols of both life and mortality that haunted him throughout his career. The painting now hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
