Giuseppe Arcimboldo painted La Primavera in 1563, composing a human face entirely from spring flowers, leaves, and blossoms in one of the most inventive and playful works of 16th-century Mannerism. Created for the Habsburg court of Emperor Maximilian II, it now hangs in Madrid.
