Katsushika Hokusai created The Great Wave around 1831 as part of his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series, depicting a towering ocean wave dwarfing the distant mountain in an image of sublime power. Now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, it is the most recognized work of Japanese art.
